Ten Year 10 female mathematics students have applied and been chosen to take part in a wonderful new initiative between St Francis Xavier College and the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute’s and its CHOOSEMATHS Mentoring program.
The program started this term and will run for the next few years at the Beaconsfield Campus. The program involves the students taking part in online discussion groups with university mathematics students and professionals using mathematics in their careers. The aim of the program is to provide a safe place for female students to ask questions about their future, to introduce them to role models in mathematics, and to showcase the range of careers open to them with a mathematics background.
The program also provides additional support, either to boost confidence, provide advice for those not sure of their career path or to encourage girls who are not sure whether to continue with higher levels of mathematics in school.
