College Based Umpiring Academy

Activity Leader
Tim O’Meara

In 2015, St Francis Xavier College partnered up with the South East Juniors and AFL Victoria to develop and operate a School Based Umpiring Academy. Feedback from teachers and parents of young people who take on the challenge of umpiring note a positive impact on their levels of confidence, communication and leadership skills.

St Francis Xavier College provides to students;

  • a fully supervised, free of charge after-hours sport leadership program delivered by trained coaches
  • the chance for students to develop their skills and earn income by officiating with local umpiring group (South East Juniors) as field umpires

Why a school based umpiring academy?

  • it allows friends and peers to participate together in a fun and challenging environment
  • it reduces travel time and the need for transport to and from an external venue
  • the academy starts straight after school allowing participants more time with their family or for study during the week

Participants are registered umpires with the South East Juniors (Football League) and are appointed to games appropriate to their age and ability once they are ready for officiating junior football. Students can be appointed to any of the three disciplines of umpiring; field, boundary or goal umpiring.

In 2017, training and coaching occurs each Tuesday after school (3.30pm – 4.45pm) at the Beaconsfield Campus.
